The resilient Khomas regional senior netball team were on Saturday night crowned champions of the Debmarine national senior netball championship, after beating Erongo 41-29.
The national championship was played at the Khomasdal Sports Stadium netball courts on Friday and Saturday.
Erongo booked their place in the final after thrashing Omaheke 37-22 in the first semi-final, while Khomas beat Otjozondjupa 33-17 to book a rematch with a team they struggled with in their opening game of the championship on Friday.
Friday night featured Khomas beating their arch-rival Erongo, 17-16, in one of the most entertaining and nail-biting matches of the competition.
In the final on Saturday night, Erongo started off like a house on fire, dominating play in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but Khomas settled in as the match progressed and took a 10-8 lead.
The home team put their foot down and led all four quarters of the game to a 41-29 victory.
Erongo were only close on points at the end of the second quarter, when they trailed 20-19. The coastal team were trailing by five points in the third quarter, 27-22 points.
Addressing players, supporters and officials during the award ceremony, Netball Namibia secretary-general Imelda Nerongo said a lot of talent surfaced during the competition and gave the national team scouts a chance to select more players for the existing pool.
“We are really happy to see players giving it their all at this championship. Next year, we hope to have all the regions competing at this event and hopefully we will have improved prize monies that teams will challenge each other for,” she said.
The Khomas Region walked away with N$30 000, Erongo N$15 000 and Omaheke N$9 000 in third place after beating Otjozondjupa 15-14.
The event was organised with funds availed by Debmarine Namibia that signed a three-year sponsorship worth N$1.8 million with netball Namibia. The money will be used for the Netball Pent Series in September; regional league grants of N$10 000 annually, and for development of the NN website. - Nampa
