Kiddie Sport demonstrations held for the 26th year

The annual Kiddie Sport demonstrations take place today and tomorrow at the Wanderers'' indoor hockey court.
This event has been held for the past 26 years, and this year is no different with Coca-Cola sponsoring N$45 000 towards hosting it.
More than 1 500 kids (aged 4 to 9 years) have taken part in the Kiddie Sport programme this year with 15 coaches in Windhoek, Omeya, Outjo and Stampriet.
The purpose of the demonstration is to give parents the opportunity to evaluate the progress their children have made during the year and is also an opportunity for interested people to come and evaluate the programme.
The Kiddie Sport programme consists of exercises to improve the children''s hand-to-eye coordination, their foot-to-eye coordination and total body coordination.
Coaching involves basic sport skills and all ball games are included – hockey, tennis, cricket, soccer, golf etc.
An advantage of the Kiddie Sport programme is that a coach can spot talent at a young age and then recommend advanced training in a specific sport code in advance.
The programme has become a hit because it encourages children to partake in a variety of sports codes, which gives them a host of options to choose from when they are older. Many children drop out of individual sports codes later if they have started to participate in it at a tender age.
“I believe that training for young children should be all-round, incorporating different sport codes. Children should be wary of specializing in a particular sport too soon. Sport is fun and children love to have fun – which is our aim at Kiddie Sport!” says the founder, Amanda van Dyk.
“One reason why pupils enjoy the Kiddie Sport programme is because so many of the skills are taught by means of games.”
