Land Rover club presents talk on Kaokoland
Hosted by off-road “king of Kaokoland”, Johan Snyman.
Land Rover Owners Namibia (LRON) will be hosting their monthly social evening tomorrow, where the public can mix and mingle with club members, share their awesome adventure stories and compare notes in preparation for their next getaway.
This month, guest speaker, Johan Snyman, is a seasoned overland traveler with a wealth of knowledge on Namibia and has authored two meticulously-detailed books on Kaokoland and Damaraland.
During his presentation, he will touch on what makes Kaokoland such a magical place and how to go about preparing for your own adventure through this unforgiving, yet unforgettable, landscape.
Kaokoland is in the far north-western corner of Namibia and is a barren, unspoiled mountainous, desert region that is alluring, yet utterly inhospitable to all but its local population and the extremely well-prepared traveler.
Snyman will discuss how he prepares his vehicle, a 300TDI Land Rover that he used for more than 350 000 km during his research, the fauna and flora of the areas as well as the roads, tracks and rivers that he drove to record every possible way point and point of interest.
His books will be on sale during the event and his guide to Kaokoland has been hailed as the most complete and comprehensive available at present. It contains all the information that a prospective visitor needs to make informed choices when planning a tour to and through the area.
Snyman has personally driven, logged and described every road, track, river and unproclaimed track in the area (3800 km).
Approximately 400 colour photographs have been used to illustrate the above.
Both books, on Kaokoland and Damaraland, the latter of which he will discuss at the LRON Social Evening on 7 September, will be on sale at these events.
The social evening takes place at the Old Wheelers’ Club in Olympia and starts from 18:00 and entrance is free. -LRON
