Lesotho eliminate Warriors from Cosafa contention

Despite dominating possession and having better chances, the Brave Warriors lost 5-4 on penalties to Lesotho in their 2017 Cosafa Castle Cup quarterfinal match played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg on Saturday.
The Namibians dominated the game and had more ball possession and created three shots on target in the first half, adding one more in the second as they failed to find the back of the net on a wet and cold night in Rustenburg.
Virgil Vries started in goal and in the absence of Willem Mwedihanga, Chris Katjiukua was partnered in defence by utility man Denzil Hoaseb while Larry Horaeb and Ananias Gebhardt started as wing backs.
Captain Ronaldo Ketjijere and his engine room mate Wangu Gome were holding it down in midfield, while Deon Hotto, Petrus Shitembi, Itamunua Keimuine and Peter Shalulile lead the attacks for Ricardo Mannetti's men, on their return to the venue where they were crowned 2015 Cosafa champions.
Lesotho had two good first-half chances, but Bokang Sello fired his free kick into the wall and Hlompho Kalake missed from a pass laid onto his path. Poor shooting from Namibia cost them in the second stanza, notably Itamunua Keimuine, who had the goal at his mercy in the 63rd minute as the game finished goalless.
In the shootout, which followed 90 minutes of football, Lesotho kicked first, but had their second effort saved.
For Namibia, substitute Roger Katjiteo missed over the crossbar for his side to lose the advantage and in sudden death Lesotho goalkeeper Likano Mphuthi came up trumps by diving to his right to save Gebhardt's effort and win the match for his team.
The Brave Warriors will now, like last year at home, contest the plate section and will be in action tomorrow as they take on the loser of quarterfinal 4 between Swaziland and Zimbabwe.
Last night, the other two quarter-finals were also hosted at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace featuring defending champions South Africa against Tanzania, before Swaziland took on Zimbabwe.
Zambia also advanced by beating last year's runners-up Botswana 2-1 as they seek a record-breaking fifth southern African championship.
