Two of the biggest school events slated for later in March in Walvis Bay were cancelled in light of the two positive coronavirus cases in Windhoek.

The Namibian Private Schools Organisation (Napso) annual athletics meet was supposed to take place at Swakopmund on 22 and 23 March. Pro-Ed Academy were the hosts and about 21 private schools were expected to participate in track and field items over the course of two days.

Wouter Niehaus, the CEO of Napso, explained the cancellation was due to the official announcement made by the ministry of education on Sunday that schools will be closed between 16 March and 14 April.

He expressed his gratitude towards Pro-Ed Academy for their meticulous planning of the event.

“The athletics competition will the only take place next year and all the schools listed to host the event from next year on will only host the athletics one year later than scheduled. A special thank you to Florinda Fourie, the sports head at Pro-Ed, who has been working on this event for the past three months.”

With regard to the annual Napso teachers’ congress, Niehaus said they would try their best to postpone it to October.

“Good luck to everyone and may we use this time to find a place at our Father’s feet and lay down every vulnerable Namibian.”

The seventh annual BUCO Woestynfees hosted by Walvis Bay Private School was also expected to take place from 25 to 28 March at the school’s sports fields. This festival has also been cancelled.

Henry Kemp, the sports head of department of the school, said all tours to South Africa were also cancelled.

“In addition, the sports fields of WBPHS will be out of bounds for the next 14 days for all practices.”

About 16 rugby teams, seven netball and 11 hockey teams from both South Africa and Namibia were expected to participate in the festival.
