Lots of action at Tony Rust
ACTION-packed racing in three categories made for some great entertainment at the Tony Rust race track last Saturday, when the Windhoek Motor Club hosted the 4th leg of the National Go-Kart and Circuit Racing competition.
The day kicked off at 09:00 with nine go-karts participating on the kart track.
In the Junior kart section it was Rhys Graig who managed to clinch 1st place after Adriaan Nel couldn?t finish the first heat. Nell went on to take 1st place in both heats two and three, but in the end his points were not enough to beat Graig. Mathew Strydom, one of the younger participants in the class, came in third.
Jay-Dee Kessler took no prisoners and had an easy three-outof- three win in the Senior kart section. Michael Strydom battled to come in second, while Athi Mankongwana took third place.
Luigi and Jaco participated in the Master karts section, with the latter being crowned victor for the day with two wins in total.
Circuit racing started at 13:00 with nine cars and eight bikes participating.
Christiaan Liebenberg took his City Clutch and Brake Subaru Impreza to a three-out-of-three win for the day. Robby Eichoff nursed his RE Automotive BMW M3 to second place, after having mechanical problems and two flat tyres in heat two. Hard luck struck Michel Rust yet again, when he was forced to retire his Buffalo Tyres Nissan Sabre with electrical problems. He started all three heats for the day, but retired in both heat two and three.
Andrea Havenga drove his Chevrolet Record to a 1st place in the Clubman?s Class C, with Thorsten Sternagel settling in second with his Collecting and Delivery Services Opel Kadet. Both Chaan Brown (Cobron Cooling Opel Kadet) and Pieter Kotze (Toyota Conquest Tazz) jumped from Class D to Class C, after doing less than the allowed 80 seconds, three or more times in heat one.
Brown then managed to place himself 3rd in Class C for the day. Guilliaume Kruger (Master Drive Toyota Avante) took an easy win for Class D, after Brown and Kotze moved up to Class C, with Erich van Dyk (Ford Focus) settling for second place. The latter also retired in heat two due to a broken side-shaft.
Richard Slamet made a cleansweep in the Superbikes 600 category with another 3-out-of-3 win for the day on his IS Freight Services Yamaha R6. Slamet had to battle himself to the front in heat two, when Nigel Slabbert (Yamaha R6) took the lead for some time. Slabbert took second overall for the day, with veteran Hedley Tavenor taking third.
Dominique Arlove snatched first place in the Bikes Production Class, having to fight Ze Commando race after race. Commando settled for second place in the end, not having all the power available to beat Arlove. The next event is scheduled for 8 October 2011.
