LPMYL initiates new student recruitment drive

Precious Nghitaunapo The Landless People Movement’s Youth League (LPMYL) kicked off their first Student Recruitment Drive, the LPM Youth Command Element at Institutions of Higher Learning at the Namibian Centre of Open Learning (Namcol) on 1 February. The campaign, intended for institutions of higher education, is set to increase the active involvement of tertiary students in politics and decision-making processes and economics of the country. As a part of the campaign the LPM party plans on establishing different branches of the campaign at tertiary institutions across the country for the duration of February. The initiation of the campaign was influenced by the lack of student and youth members in the active participation in strategic decision-making. LPM youth leader Duminga Ndala said: “Young people are excluded from decision-making and the plan is to integrate the young people in a political space to spark interest.” She highlighted the importance of familiarising them with the political environment. Political lectures will start in Keetmanshoop with the theme ‘Politics of Betrayal: How Namibia is Being Stolen’. The team is pleased with the positive response they have received from the students and the general public. A moderate number of students have signed up, despite the fact that institutions have not officially commenced with teaching. Nonetheless, the team is satisfied and plan on returning to Namcol and eventually more institutions of Higher Education like Monitronic Success College and the International University of Management (IUM). Furthermore, apart from the recently launched campaign the team is excited to introduce their next campaign #YouthOnTop which will be launched towards the end of February. “Young people make up 60% of the population in the country but remain the marginalised group,” Ndala said.
