Maltahöhe Village Council inaugurates new building
MALTAHÖHE – The Minister of Urban and Rural Development on Thursday inaugurated the newly built Maltahöhe Village Council building, constructed at a cost of N$8.5 million.
Sophia Shaningwa described the building as another demonstration of the Swapo party government's commitment to invest in infrastructure in the regions and local authorities across the country to enable these entities to deliver services to the electorates.
She said central Government remained committed to strengthening the capacities of local authorities, including creating a conducive environment to operate from.
“This is done with the aim of improving productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery to the people.”
Shaningwa further said it was evident from the opening of various service providers and shops such as Woermann & Brock and Pep Stores that the village was moving into a good direction in terms of financial and economic growth.
“Market your village and attract investors to increase socio-economic development and employment,” Shaningwa said, adding that with the necessary assistance from the community and ministry, she was confident that the village would soon develop into a fully-fledged town.
She said in this context, the village council would have the daunting task of delivering basic services such as affordable housing and serviced urban land to the residents, especially police officers, nurses and teachers, but not for free.
“I am asking the village council to improve revenue collection to ensure there is enough financial resources for infrastructural development.
“I am encouraging you to prove yourselves to me that your village council is ready and worth being upgraded to a town council status,” Shaningwa said to a boisterous applause.
She urged staff and the community to take good care of the building as it is their own.
To staff and councillors specifically, she asked them to maintain an open door policy, take pleasure in serving the community and ensure efficiency and professionalism at all times.
The event was attended by Hardap Governor Esme Isaack, community members, local authority councillors and various stakeholders. -Nampa
