Maltas hosts 7th Annual Cancer Run at Maltahöhe
Maltas Club Namibia, a non-profit organisation with its sole purpose of uplifting and empowering Namibians, held its 7th Annual Can Run in Maltahöhe recently.
This year’s run was sponsored by FNB Namibia. The purpose of the annual cancer run is to educate and inform rural communities across Namibia about the symptoms, causes, signs and remedies for the various types of cancer.
The team kicked off the two-day event with motivational workshops at the primary and secondary schools in Maltahöhe. Maltas President Helena Shigweda encouraged the learners to stay in school and take their education very seriously and become role models in their own community.
Herculus Jantze, the councillor for the Daweb constituency, delivered the keynote address where he encouraged the community to eat healthy and exercise regularly to overcome obesity. In addition Jantze encouraged the people of Maltahöhe to go for regular check-ups so that they can be aware of the earlier signs which might lead to cancer.
Close to hundred community members took part in this year’s 5km race, including the councillor spouse, Erika Jantze. The participants in the run ranged from the age groups of 4 – 60.
Eighteen medals and certificates were awarded to the winners of this year’s cancer run. Fritz Tsaobeb, a learner from the secondary school, was the top runner and the winner of the Maltas Cancer Run Floating Trophy.
After all formalities all the runners took part in the pyramid building challenge, marshmallow challenge and blindfolding walking competitions.
The Maltas Club Community Development Manager: Elsie Ikaumbi expresses her sincere gratitude to the people of Maltahöhe, in particular Josef van der Westhuizen, community development activist, for bringing the event to his village, as well as Maltahöhe Hotel.
Ikaumbi said the club will return to the village for the 8th Cancer Run in September 2018.
