Mapping crucial for detailed 2021 census
National mapping is a key element for the preparations and execution of the 2021 census.
The first leg of the 2021 National Census Mapping exercise has started in the Zambezi region.
The exercise, which aims to demarcate the entire Namibia into uniquely defined units of enumeration areas, will run until October 2020. These enumeration areas will provide an accurate national geographic frame to conduct censuses, which in this case will be census 2021.
According to the statistician general of the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), Alex Shimuafeni, the project will collect detailed information regarding the characteristics of a structure, the number of people that live in the building and any other information which cannot be obtained during an office exercise.
Digital
“Namibia aspires to conduct a digital census in 2021 in which Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewers using tablets will be employed. The census mapping is a key element for the preparations and execution of the 2021 census,” Shimuafeni said.
Census mapping will also be done to facilitate in the assigning of areas of counting to field staff during the main census and to enable the enumerators to plan their movement within the enumeration areas and identify households earmarked for call-backs, especially in the urban areas.
A total of 340 mappers will be recruited for the exercise.
“The agency will start with the Zambezi region because it is a flood prone area,” Shimuafeni said, before asking for cooperation from the public during the exercise.
Namibia has undertaken three censuses - one in 1991, 2001 and the last which was conducted in 2011 following the Statistics Act (Act No. 9 of 2001) which mandates that a census is undertaken every 10 years as per international standards. - Nampa
