Iran's crash response is unacceptable
It initially seemed that Iran was not going to allow outside investigators to inspect the site and black box from the tragic Ukrainian airlines flight that killed 57 Canadians.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been right in insisting that Canadians deserve answers and that Iran must be fully co-operative.
We have a whole team of Canadians waiting on standby in Ankara, Turkey, and Iran has only granted visas for two of these individuals. Why? Why not everyone? What's the hold up?
Iran is not, to put it mildly, a trustworthy regime. They have a history of lying not just to the world but to their own people.
But in a surprise and abrupt about-face, Iranian state television reported early Saturday morning that country had in fact shot down Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752, albeit unintentionally.
The sudden confirmation of what multiple intelligence sources have been reporting since Thursday is welcome. But the investigation is just beginning — and much of Iran's crash response to this point has been unacceptable.
There needs to be extensive pressure on them to up their game over the full term of the crash probe, to get it right and to give us the full truth.
The deceased, their loved ones and the country that mourns alongside them are owed at least that much.
