Sprint sensations Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi won gold and silver in the 200-metre race and went on to add another silver for Namibia in the women’s relay yesterday afternoon.
How it went down
On Friday, in her semi-final race, 18-year-old Mboma ran 22.41 seconds to break the championship record.
Minutes later, Masilingi went 0.22 seconds quicker in her own qualifier to break the same record.
The tune for Saturday was then set, but it was Mboma who finished first, breaking the championship record by clocking 21.84 seconds.
Masilingi finished second in 22.18 seconds.
Nigeria's Favour Ofili bagged bronze in a time of 22.23 seconds.
Masilingi walked away with two silver medals, as she ran a time of 11.39 seconds in the 100 metres. That race was won by Jamaica’s Tina Clayton in a time of 11.09 seconds. Bronze went to Switzerland’s Mellissa Gutschmidt in a time of 11.51 seconds.
We enjoyed it
"Records come and go; you don't own it. I set a championship record and minutes later Masilingi lowered it even further," Mboma told World Athletics.
"The competition was really tough but what do you expect in a final?" Masilingi told World Athletics.
“To be honest, the championships were really great this year. I did enjoy every bit of it. I’m looking forward to next year," she added.
Relay
In the 4x100m event, Team Namibia took silver in a time of 43.83 seconds. Jamaica took gold in a time of 42.94 seconds. The bronze went to Nigeria as they clocked 43.98 seconds.
What’s next
Mboma and Masilingi now hope to be invited to the Diamond League in Lausanne this Thursday, before Paris on Saturday and two further legs left in the season.
"I hope to take part in Diamond League events soon," Mboma told World Athletics.
Her coach explained that one doesn’t enter or register for the Diamond League, but has to wait to be invited.
