Namibia goes Pink for Cancer!
October is Pink Month in support of women fighting cancer in Namibia. The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) on Saturday officially launched Pink Month in the capital, by hosting the 11th Annual Hats & Roses Breakfast in support of women fighting cancer in Namibia. About 800 guests, dressed in pink from head to toe, with hats adorned with roses, pink feathers and even mirrors, made the glamourous event a reality.
The theme of the event was “The Woman in the Mirror” and internationally acclaimed artist Chris Chameleon entertained the audience in word and song, while the all-Namibian vocal group Essence and Christo Biewenga wowed the crowds. More than N$170 000 was raised during the morning in ticket sales, donations and a raffle, with all funds going towards the Patient Financial Assistance Support Programme of the Association, to assist Namibian women fighting cancer.
During a pre-recorded special message of hope by the First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Ms Monica Geingos, the call to unification in the fight against cancer echoed through the banquet hall:
“This is a collective fight. It takes the diagnosis or loss of a loved one to take the message of early detection serious. Let’s talk about cancer – talk to your mother, your sister, your daughter, your colleagues and talk to you domestic worker. We must all start to talk about this disease.”
CAN Chief Executive Officer Mr Rolf Hansen reiterated that in a time of technological advancements it is not acceptable that the message of cancer awareness and education is still shunned.
“We have the tools and the media, we now need to break the stigmas and talk openly about this disease that is affecting so many of us. Share, tweet, text, WhatsApp and Skype are media at our disposal – let us use the information and tools and become educated in order to save lives.”
The Cancer Association of Namibia, in conjunction with Spar Namibia, have launched the “Power Punch for Pink” T-shirt to generate much needed funds to support Namibian women fighting cancer. The unisex T-shirt (black and pink and can be worn by men and women) is for sale at N$100 at all participating Spar stores nationwide, and also at the association’s head office, 90 John Meinert Street, Windhoek West.
Pink Month will run until the last day of October, while a nationwide movement for Pink Day will be held on Friday, 28 October.
During October, but specifically on the last Friday of the month, all Namibians are asked to wear something pink in support, in honour or in memory of women afflicted by or who have succumbed to cancer.
