Namibia ready for African Karate championship

Karate
The Namibian Karate Union has been making its name known as a growing force in Africa in recent years.

Last year NAKU successfully hosted the 2019 Region 5 Karate Championships, as well as winning numerous international medals including three bronze medals at the 2019 African Karate Championships and a silver medal at the 1st African Beach Games.

This year NAKU hopes to continue building on this momentum with the ultimate goal of possibly sending athletes to participate in the sport's debut in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The first stop on this year's competition calendar is the African Karate Championships (UFAK) which will be hosted in Tangier, Morocco from 3 to 9 February.

This year's tournament marks the 19th senior, 11th junior and 3rd cadet editions of the African championship.

Accompanying the team to Morocco will be Namibian national karate coach, Sensei Llewellyn Manale, and the team manager Marchelle de Jager.

When asked to comment on the team, captain Suzelle Pronk said: “I am very excited to once again return to Morocco to represent Namibia at the WKF African Karate Championships, which will be hosting the best karate athletes Africa has to offer.

“For senior athletes the championship is especially important this year, as it will be serving as preparation for the Olympics Qualification Championship later this year, as well as allow athletes to collect important points to improve their international rankings.

“Personally I feel we are well prepared and I am excited to see what we can achieve this year.”

The Namibia Karate Union would like to wish coach Llewellyn and his team the best of luck at the upcoming championships and look forward to see what the 2020 competition year has in store.

NAKU is proud to announce that this year's UFAK team consisting of Suzelle Pronk (team captain), Dominique Tsaneb, Shane Husselmann, Keanu Stuurman, Katelin Martin, Mayvonne Swart, Joshua Kunneke, Jan-Magiel Leff, Jewel Slinger, Miriam Idiou and Requelle Rickerts.
