NEF joins GAN

The Namibian Employers’ Federation (NEF) joins the Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) to Tackle Youth Unemployment in Namibia.
The Namibian Employers’ Federation (NEF) will launch the local network (GNN) to be known as GAN Namibia in early 2018. Currently, GNNs exist in Turkey, Indonesia, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Tanzania and Malawi.

About the GAN

Established in 2013 in response to the global youth unemployment crisis and the need for business to ensure skills for the future, the Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) is an international coalition of committed companies, international organizations and employers’ federations that are dedicated to work-readiness programs with the ultimate goal of creating job opportunities for youth and a skills base that matches labour demand.

It is a private sector led coalition which ensures that the training provided and supported by businesses actually meets the demands of the labour market.

Why the GAN?

In order to mitigate the skills mismatches and high youth unemployment rate in Namibia which is currently at 39% according to the 2016 Labour Force Survey report (NSA), the NEF aims to promote work readiness programs by linking business initiatives and employment opportunities for the Namibian youth, notably through apprenticeships and internships

This initiative is in accordance with the Harambee Prosperity Plan through the promotion of Vocational Education and Training in Namibia. The establishment of the GAN Namibia program is a key priority for NEF and youth employment is part of our advocacy plan.

The core objectives of this program are:

?Commitment to increase the number of work readiness opportunities for the Namibian youth

?Advocate for work-based training and work experience for the youth

?Share best practices in the areas of apprenticeships, internships, mentoring and on-the job training

?Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogue and forge partnerships and collaborations to address skills mismatch

?Influence national policy

?Promote entrepreneurship amongst graduates

Work done so far:

?The NEF in collaboration with the ILO has commissioned Business Intelligence Africa to conduct a survey on the current practices on apprenticeships countrywide

?About 10 (ten) members of the NEF have shown interest to join the GAN Namibia network

?With guidance from our legal representatives, drafted a generic Contract of Employment for Apprentices

?Signed an MoU with Young Africa Foundation to promote training programs

?Ongoing consultations with relevant government ministries, youth advocacy institutions and training institutions to form collaborative partnerships

The NEF will launch the local network (GNN) to be known as GAN Namibia in early 2018. Currently, GNNs exist in Turkey, Indonesia, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Tanzania and Malawi.
