Amika le Roux recently joined the team of fairies that make your skin glow and feel healthy again. Amika is a qualified somtalogist. For those who are not familiar with the term, a somatologist is someone that is interested in the aesthetics of a person. Treatments include reflexology, massage, hydrotherapy, electrolysis, and so forth.

According to Amika, becoming an aesthetician requires one to have a passion for skincare. In addition to that, you should know how to provide outstanding service to clients. An understanding of different skin care treatments is just as important to becoming an aesthetician.

Amika studied at the Isa Carstens Academy in Stellenbosch. After three years she received her advanced diploma to professionally take care of the biggest organ of the human body, the skin.

For many, a trip to get a facial is a luxury but aestheticians delve much deeper than just a facial and rather provides a more permanent solution.

“We take the function of our skin for granted, it performs on so many levels,” says Le Roux.

Our skins are exposed to various external and internal factors, which can have an impact on the health and appearance of your skin.

A common misconception about the career is that aestheticians are still commonly viewed as beauticians. “As an aesthetician we constantly need to defend our name and explain the impact we have on many of our clientele,” says Le Roux. A healthy-looking skin free from various conditions is something that most strive towards. Aestheticians can analyse the skin, diagnose accordingly and also give and guide clients to various skin care solutions.

Although the Namibian aesthetic industry has been growing over the years, it still remains a challenge to keep up with the latest developing technologies in the field. At the Aesthetic Centre Olympia, the management makes sure the centre is up to date with all the latest technologies in the industry. The centre boasts with highly qualified top management, such as, managing director Dr Jonathan Joffe, who is a member of the Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Society of South Africa as well as the American Academy of Aesthetic medicine. The practice manager, Nadia Horsthemke, worked at the global company, the Steiner Transocean Group.

More about Le Roux

When she’s not living out her passion to help people at the practice, Le Roux makes herself happy by baking and cooking new recipes. In addition to that, she enjoys long walks with her four-legged babies. Besides giving attention to her hobbies, Le Roux enjoys a good series and a good book. When asked what she cannot live without, unlike others who say they can’t live without their phones, Le Roux can’t live without her mother, because of the support, love and mentorship she receives from her mother.

Beauty tips from a pro

1. Take care of your skin today and your future self will be grateful.

2. Number one in everyone’s skincare routine should be a good quality SPF that you apply every day to combat those harmful sun rays.
