The newly established Desert View Private School in Walvis Bay will officially open its doors for learners on 26 January 2021.

“We currently have approximately 70 registrations which we are hoping will grow when schools commence. We have one class per grade and we offer classes from pre-primary up to IGCSE-level. We also assist grade 12 Namcol learners who are of a school-going age, but we unfortunately do not assist adults,” principal Kim Koch said.

A Christian-based school, Desert View will make use of the Namibian syllabus for their curriculum offered from pre-primary until grade seven.

For grade eight until IGCSE-level, they make use of the Cambridge international syllabus.

Teaching the tiny ones

“We also have a preschool, focused on learners from the ages of three months to five years. Each classroom has a different theme and we provide breakfast and lunch for the children.

“Children from our preschool will automatically be accepted into pre-primary,” Koch added.

“We felt that Walvis Bay needed a school that was in the ‘middle’. You get your government schools that are free and then you get your private schools of which some are very expensive. So, our school fee structure fits in the middle. We have smaller classes catering for 10 to 12 kids in our junior division and up to 20 in our senior division, which allows for one-on-one attention,” she added.

Custom uniform

The school also offers homework assistance, which is open to learners from other schools as well.

“We also have a custom-made uniform which is black and white. Sharmine Linvingstone, one of the school’s board members, designed the school’s badge. And the school building is painted the same colours as the school badge,” the principal said.

The school will also offers extramurals and sports, which include archery, dance, kickboxing, baking and sewing classes.
