The Namibia Football Association (NFA) Women’s Desk yesterday launched the 2017 NFA Women’s Super Cup, which will be start this weekend and conclude on 2 December.
The games will take place at the NFA Technical Centre in Windhoek and will see eight teams facing off in the quarter-finals this Saturday and Sunday, with the semi-finals scheduled for 01 December at the same venue.
The final match will serve as the curtain raiser to the men’s Debmarine Cup final, which will be played between Young African and Mighty Gunners on 02 December at the Legare Stadium in Gobabis.
Speaking at the launch, Jackie Gertze, head of the NFA's Women’s Desk, called on spectators to support the women as they parade their skills in the inaugural tournament.
The tournament is the brainchild of Jackie Shipanga, the general manager of the Women’s Desk, who committed a third of the N$30 000 she won at the 2017 Namibian Sports Awards towards the Women’s Super Cup.
Shipanga said the main idea was to give young girls an opportunity to participate and compete at a higher level.
She said the senior women did not play any league matches this season, and that is why the Gladiators performed below par at the Cosafa tournament in Bulawayo last September.
“Hence, the need for the girls to participate in competitions, as they are the key to competition,” she said, adding that women must show that they are determined when it comes to women’s football.
Gladiators coach Brian Isaacs welcomed the developments, saying he will use it as a platform to scout for more senior players and broaden the base of the players.
Teams will be divided into two groups, with Tura Magic Ladies and Khomas NamPol seeded in groups A and B, respectively.
Other teams taking part in the tournament are V-Power Angels, Mighty Erongo and Oshana Queens in group A, with Gal & Goals, Right Way and Western Angels completing group B.
The winner will walk away with N$10 000, runners-up N$5 000, third place N$3 000, and fourth place N$2 000.
Clubs that do not progress past the group stages will receive equipment from the NFA and sponsors.
Other sponsors include NFA President Frans Mbidi; NFA Secretary-general Barry Rukoro; Emanuel Hamutenya from Right Way Ladies Football Club; Lowanan Nangombe (the musician known as Wambüseun); Thru Pass Magazine; Telecom Namibia; German development agency (GIZ); and the Namibia Football Players’ Union. - Nampa
