NO danger in exercise

Mandy Rittmann
DR. A C OBHOLZER WRITES:

Namibia and South-Africa relaxed Covid-19 control measures at the end of last week, in response to improved data on the third wave.

They are trade and travel partners and tend to co-ordinate their actions. South-Africa opened gyms, however Namibia kept them shut. The reason is “high risk of transmission”. This does not make evidence-based sense!

We must strike a balance between lives and livelihoods. Movement of mind and body is life, keep moving and live. It is desirable to have a healthy mind in a healthy body.

Until two years ago progressive medical aid funds contributed toward gym membership as this made business sense. Health-conscious members have fewer claims. Inexplicably this benefit was withdrawn by NAMAF.

The cost of disease is loss of production/output/income.

The cost of treatment expensive. Investing in your health is your single best investment - wealth.

Gyms that are professionally well run, are low risk for Covid-19, not “high risk”.

You join the gym by choice

You are health conscious. Your vaccination rate is high.

You pay plus minus N$600 per month.

You don't go to the gym if you don't feel well.

You are prohibited from entering a gym without a face mask and a temperature reading of over 38 degrees Celsius.

You must sanitize your hands and every second apparatus is deactivated.

Social distancing (greater than 1,5 m) is mandatory!

Disposable paper towels for sweat and wiping down apparatus are available inside the gym.

Numbers are restricted to 50 or 50% of capacity. 20 percent of people have cancelled their gym membership because of Covid and the recession.

You can also apply flexitime to achieve uncrowding.

The sauna must be closed – sweating, breathing in confined humid places is risky.

Air conditioning is a downdraft.

Gyms do NOT spread Covid-19, flu, measles, TB etc. if operated professionally and adequately.

The Covid-19 pandemic is a major public health issue for the last 2 years.

We have been part of this world and we want to survive.

Logical evidence-based information will lead to public cooperation.

Vaccination is the key to achieving eighty percent herd immunity to break the transmission cycle. It is your safety belt. You may crash, but you won't die from Covid-19 complications.

How many politicians and civil servants exercise regularly and lead by example?

The former minister of health, Dr. Bernard Haufiku, was a regular. His services were terminated as among others, he condemned approval of a tobacco plantation in the Zambezi region for ethical health reasons.

Speak truth to power. Choose lifestyle over deathstyle. Do not confuse the public!
