No Omake for Harambee at Vaalgras

Mandy Rittmann
Disgruntled Resident writes:
I want to put it on record once again that I am not comfortable with what recently happened at our native village, Vaalgras.
I am in particular concerned about what is happening at Farm Haichas, which was acquired through the Government resettlement program to expand Vaalgras traditional communal grazing land. The obvious reason is that more and more children of subsistence communal farmers are taking farming seriously. In other words, veritable land for farming is becoming less and less.
Contrary to this, the Vaalgras Traditional Authority is misusing their recognition by Government to show the subjects that they are in charge. The most disheartening fact is that they don't use their recognition for socio-economic development, but rather to oppress those who are not their staunch supporters, viz. the members of Vaalgras Interim Committee.
The latter group did not benefit in any way from the Farm Haichas. Only one of their Senior Traditional Councillors and the right-hand man of the Secretary have been - in my opinion illegally - placed there, as apparent caretakers.
It is important to underscore that the Farm Haichas is about 12 800 hectares big, which is almost half of the Vaalgras traditional communal area.
The other disheartening issue which has been handled very unfairly and corruptly is the Namibian-German Special Initiative Goat Scheme. Only about 2% of the members of Vaalgras Interim Committee benefited from the seven hundred (700) goats. This is inept, obnoxious and nefarious.
The scheme goats in question were only distributed once in October 2012 and forcefully taken back. Only a few people returned the goats voluntarily.
There was no second phase distribution and the goats were instead taken to the much talk about controversial Haichas Farm to pour more oil on the fire. The numbers of the goats as well as the number of their generation remain a top secret. One cannot entrust your property into the hands of such cantankerous and dishonest leaders as there is a strong element which encroaches on stealing.
Now, my big question is how and where does Vaalgras fit in with Harambee, a very good vision to build one big Namibian house in which everyone will be included and to fight hunger and poverty from there. There is no way Vaalgras can be an integral part of it, if the establishment of Local Economic Development Committee is rejected in the first place.
The head of State, H.E. President Hage Geingob, the Hon. Minister Dr. Zephania Kameeta and the Minister of National Planning Commission, Hon. Tom Alweendo should intervene strategically for the people of Vaalgras to prosper.
Thus, my strong appeal to the Government is to intervene on time to ensure that the leadership crisis and vacuum at Vaalgras is resolved amicably, so that we get rid of avarice, dishonest and faceless leaders aimed at personal economic and self-enrichment agendas. Dr. Kameeta should come and tell us whether we are still part of Namibia and rescue us from the yoke of these hegemonic autocrats for common betterment and prosperity.
