NSC awards national colours to athletes
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) this week awarded national colours to 13 Paralympic athletes and officials, namely the benchrest shooting team; the Golf Federation as well as the Bass Angling Association.
The official handover of the national colours was conducted by the director of Disability Sports in the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service, Jo-Anne Manuel, who called on all the athletes from the four sporting codes to represent the country well.
“On behalf of the government, we encourage you to act and behave diligently as you are now representing Namibia. Go out there and enjoy yourself and bring us medals,” Manuel said.
She further thanked the sponsors, especially NamPower for coming to the rescue of the Paralympic teams, saying their commitment to sports is unquestionable as they have displayed in the past by supporting other sport codes such as boxing.
Simataa Freddy Mwiya, the Chief Administrator of the NSC, paid tribute to the various sporting codes for continuing to develop athletes capable of competing at international stages, despite difficult circumstances.
“As the Sports Commission, we are happy to see that despite the limited resources, sport codes are able to send athletes out of the country. We would like to thank various sponsors who have made this possible, while at the same time we call upon other corporate companies to come on board,” he said.
The Paralympic athletes will participate at the 2018 Berlin Grand Prix from 27 June to 01 July in Germany.
The bass angling team is participating at the Region 5 Bass Federation international tournament scheduled for 22 to 27 July in Lake Chicamba Real in Mozambique. The benchrest shooting team will take part in the Rimfire championships from 23 to 28 July in Spain.
The golf team, meanwhile, will take part in the 2018 Junior British Open from 16-18 July in Scotland. - Nampa
