The Namibian Standards Council chairperson Martha Kandawa-Schulz on Friday showed appreciation to the Namibia NSI saying it has come a long way as a department within the former ministry of trade and industry formerly known as the Namibia Standards Information and Quality Office.

She made these remarks on Friday evening at the National Quality Week commemorations held in Windhoek and organised by the NSI.

Not only that, the same event commemorated 3 other events, which are the Annual World Standards Day, the Annual National Quality Awards, and the NSI’s 10-year anniversary.

Kandawa-Schulz highlighted that the NSI serves as Namibia’s National Standards Body and is responsible for coordinating all trade related standardisation and quality assurance activities in the country.

“The institution represents Namibia at regional and international standardisation activities, to advance national interest in the development of standards and conformity assessment functions,” she said.

National Quality Awards

The National Quality Awards programme is one of the outputs of the Cabinet approved National Quality Policy document of 1 June 1999. According to her, the programme strives to develop a strong and fully functional national quality infrastructure in Namibia, she said. The chairperson during the event said that the winners selected have become the official representatives of Namibia at the annual SADC Quality Awards event taking place next year.

The 2018 edition winner for the Company of the Year category’s SME section are Mpact Corrugated (Pty) Ltd while Namibia Media Monitoring (Namedia) became the first runner up.

Large Enterprise Company of the Year award’s first place went to Etosha Fishing Corporation Pty Ltd (Walvis Bay) whereas Ohorongo Cement took the second place.

In the Product of the Year 2018 category, which goes to a product that best reflects a commitment to quality, Mpact Corrugated (Pty) Ltd took the first place in the SME section while the runner up prize went to Nghandiza Investment cc.

Large Enterprise Product of the year award’s first place went to Etosha Fishing Corporation Pty Ltd (Walvis Bay) while Ohorongo Cement (Otavi) emerged as the runner up.

In the Service of the Year category, whose award is presented to a locally-delivered service that best reflects a commitment to local production practices and quality, Omamanya Laboratory Services took the first place in the SME section, whileas Gates Circle Investment (Victoria Nanny Agency) was the runner up.

Large Enterprise Service of the year award first place went to Ohorongo Cement (Otavi) while Flamingo Inflight Services took the second place.

For the Exporter of the Year category, whose award is presented to a company or organisation that has made significant progress in commencing or expanding exports to new or wider markets, the award went to a large enterprise exporter which is Etosha Fishing Corporation Pty Ltd (Walvis Bay).

During the same ceremony, an Individual Quality Award, which is given to an individual that has made significant input into Namibian standards, quality assurance, accreditation and metrology efforts, was also awarded.

The 2018 Individual Quality Award went to Frans Otto !Gaoseb

Namibia Dairies certification

The certification body has during the same event awarded the Namibia Dairies a certificate of conformity to the international standard ISO 9001. The certificate is issued in recognition of Namibia Dairies (Pty) Ltd’s commitment to have its Quality Management System (QMS) certified, which was audited by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) and found to be in conformance with all the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management Systems requirement standard.

“This certification of Namibia Dairies is a confirmation of their ability to demonstrate conformity to quality management system requirements, consistently provide products and services of a high quality and consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements,” she said.

Quality awareness

The event’s keynote speaker Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila urged the institution to create awareness among the country’s producers about the importance of conforming to standards which will eventually allow them to access local markets.

This is because producers of local fresh produce in the country face challenges in accessing the market provided by the government procurement system, due to the national quality standards that they are not able to meet, she said.
