Omuthiya gets 50 houses under PPP
OMUTHIYA – Fifty affordable houses will be constructed at Omuthiya's Extension 5 under a public-private partnership (PPP).
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday for the project that will see the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) collaborate with Atlantic Port and Logistics.
“Today provides another opportunity to exhibit a collective sense of pride and happiness as we forge ahead towards the realisation of providing housing to many homeless Namibians,” the minister of urban and rural development, Sophia Shaningwa, said during the ceremony.
Shaningwa said Omuthiya was one of the local authorities that did not benefit from the first phase of the Mass-housing Development Programme.
“It is commendable that NHE took the initiative to find ways to address housing needs by working with the private sector and selected Omuthiya as one of the beneficiaries of this initiative,” she said.
She went on to say 20 000 houses are expected to be delivered countrywide during the five-year period of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP).
The HPP is an action plan introduced by President Hage Geingob in 2016 towards “prosperity for all in the Namibian house”.
The chairperson of the NHE board, Sam Shivute, said the NHE is working tirelessly to ensure efficient and effective deliverance of its mandate of building and financing quality housing for the inhabitants of Namibia.
In line with its mandate and the HPP, Shivute said, the NHE invited institutions to submit proposals for the financing and development of housing in various localities around the country where his enterprise has land available.
Shaningwa launched a similar NHE housing project at Oshakati's Ekuku Extension 6 on Thursday.
