The 41st edition of the Sperrgebiet Amateur Championship took place at the Oranjemund Golf Club last weekend.

The event was sponsored by Vivo Energy Namibia. This is the 20th year that Vivo Energy Namibia is sponsoring the event.

The competition format was medal with the A, B and C divisions competing over 54 holes and the D division over 36 holes (stableford).

The tournament received good support from players as far afield as Tsumeb, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Karasburg, Rosh Pinah, Alexander Bay (SA), Aggeneys (SA) and Springbok (SA).

The weather was misty in the mornings with a southwesterly wind in the afternoon.

NAMIBIA BEATS NAMAQUALAND

As is customary, the Championship was preceded by the Vivo Energy Challenge between Namibia and Namaqualand on Friday.

The format was foursomes in the morning, followed by eight singles matches in the afternoon.

An incentive of N$6 000 to break the course record (65) was on offer, but no one came close. The wind started and the course became tough and many balls were lost in the thick bushes.

Namibia won the foursomes by 3.5 points to Namaqualand's 0.5.

In the individual contest, the two teams drew at four points each.

Namibia won the Vivo Energy Namibia Challenge by 7.5 to 4.5.
