Ondangwa exhibition receives financial boost
ONDANGWA - A well-attended gala dinner held on Saturday to raise funds for the Ondangwa Trade and Industrial Exhibition (OTIE) collected some N$442 000 in cash and pledges.
The money will be used to host the sixth edition of the OTIE from 29 April to 07 May this year.
Chicco Group of Companies pledged the highest amount of N$50 000, followed by First National Bank (FNB)’s Ondangwa branch and Air Namibia with N$40 000 and N$25 000 respectively.
Vice-President Nickey Iyambo, who was the guest of honour, and several others each contributed N$5 000.
“The economic development of Ondangwa and any other town is the responsibility of every single inhabitant, but more so of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which together are employing more people than big companies,” Iyambo said while speaking at the event.
He went on to ask the Ondangwa local authority to continue creating conducive conditions SMEs and vendors to operate in.
“Identify and remove bureaucratic red tape and obstacles which are obstructing the growth of SMEs and big business in your town. Follow rules but facilitate quickly and flexibly, and if some by-laws are hampering development, please change them,” the vice-president urged.
He also gave his assurance of Government’s commitment to continue creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive in.
Ondangwa Mayor Paavo Amwele said his local authority hosts the OTIE every year to provide a platform for business people to obtain trade information and to network with each other.
Amwele said his council realises how important the hosting of the OTIE is and as such, it has resolved to invest in the development of a trade centre at the town.
The first phase of the centre has been completed at a cost of N$14 million.
Prominent businessman John Akapandi Endjala is the patron of the OTIE.
