Clemens von Alten - The Economic Association of Namibia (EAN) has launched an online portal that aims to be a one-stop shop for statistics, policy papers, consultancy research reports and other socio-economic data.

The association says it has realised that many statistics, research papers, policies, acts and other documents of socio-economic relevance exist in Namibia, but they are not always easy to locate.

“Hence, we got the idea to establish this online document repository,” the former director of the association, Klaus Schade, said at the launch on Monday at the House of Democracy in Windhoek.

The portal was financed by the Federal Republic of Germany to the tune of N$230 000 through its development agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), said German ambassador Christian Schlaga.

The project was led by Daniel Bagwitz of the GIZ’s Promotion of Competitiveness (ProCom) team.

‘Strong supporter’

“The German government is a strong supporter of this initiative,” Schlaga said, highlighting the importance of sound facts and data.

Alex Shimuafeni, statistician-general at the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), congratulated EAN on the online, ready-to-use repository.

“Statistics inform decisions. We need that information and we must understand it in order to evaluate the impact of public policy. Much has been achieved since the establishment of the NSA, yet much still remains to be done,” Shimuafeni said, adding that the statistics agency cannot operate in isolation.

“We cannot provide for all statistical needs. For that, we need close collaboration in order to strengthen the national statistics system.”

The repository can be accessed via the website of the EAN.

Schlaga said the portal already contains about 1 800 documents.

“The online document repository is a work in progress and additional documents are uploaded continuously,” he said and called on institutions and individuals to submit reports, articles and statistics in their possession for inclusion in the directory.
