Oshikoto council to compensate affected communities
Regional and local authorities pay compensation to any inhabitant who has to be relocated from a property or land to pave way for development taking place in the area.
Oshikoto region Governor, Penda Ya Ndakolo, says the challenge of compensating affected communities who made way for development in the region remains unresolved as the regional council is waiting for funds from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD).
Ya Ndakolo said this at Omuthiya while presenting his State of the Region Address (SORA) on Friday.
“It is our sincere hope to obtain financial resources in order to speed up the land delivery process,” he stated, adding that a total of 302 plots were surveyed at Oshivelo settlement.
He pointed out that 460 plots are planned for Oshivelo, of which 30 are already serviced at Extension 1, provided with water and a sewer reticulation network, and are to be allocated during this financial year.
According to him, a house is under construction at Oshivelo settlement under the Decentralised Build Together Programme and six are being built at Onayena settlement under the same programme.
“The project commenced during the 2017/18 financial year and it’s moving at a slow pace due to budget constraints,” Ya Ndakolo stated.
Regarding the drought relief programme, he said the regional council also facilitates this programme and a total of 75 152 beneficiaries have been assisted thus far.
Ya Ndakolo expressed his “heartfelt pain on the suffering imposed on the community” by the scourge of Covid-19, saying the region has recorded over 12 000 formal and informal traders that lost income during the stage one lockdown.
“Many households thus found it hard to put food on the table. On the other hand, I also commend the government for the mitigation measures put in place to assist people,” the governor narrated.
Ya Ndakolo revealed that during 2020/21, the Oshikoto regional council received N$ 9 million for capital projects implementation.
