Over 100 protest alleged corruption at Walvis Bay

Over 100 protestors are demanding for answers from the Municipality of Walvis Bay regarding an estimated N$24 million from the Mass Land Servicing project at the town.

According to allegations by the group, the millions are linked to over 40 registered houses and are now unaccounted for by relevant departments within the municipality.

The group, led by Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Councillor Knowledge Ipinge on Thursday marched against the alleged corruption, demanding for answers from the town’s Chief Executive Officer, Muronga Haingura.

Previous media reports quoted Haingura as stating that the money was in a suspense account, which is easily traceable and that the municipality was busy reconciling the funds.

“Till to date, my office did not receive any official correspondence or feedback from the chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, the CEO or the mayor, despite the existence of a resolution taken at the last council meeting in this regard and multiple letters written to them,” Ipinge alleged.

The group has among others, demanded that an independent forensic audit be immediately launched and a conclusive investigation covering all alleged corruption within the municipality related to the Massive Urban Land servicing project be done.

“We also demand that the responsible parties within the municipality be internally charged and removed from their positions with immediate effect and all municipality agreements especially related to land and housing, be made public.”

Nobody was available to receive the petition although prior communication, seen by the media, had been made through Ipinge’s office and the group promised to continue with the protest until the relevant authorities in the municipality receive the petition.

Contacted for comment via telephone, Haingura denied having seen the letter informing him of the planned petition handover as referenced to by Ipinge.

“We however sent someone there to receive the petition but they did not want to give him the petition. We are now in a meeting and they cannot force us to come there,” Haingura said.- Nampa
