Philip Chapman, a family man of great prestige
The chief executive officer of Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) has vast banking experience which spans almost two decades, having worked in corporate and investment banking roles in various African jurisdictions including Namibia and South Africa. He most recently headed First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) Commercial and Business banking.

Chapman was born in Namibia and grew up on a family farm close to Gobabis. He started his education in Gobabis and completed high school at Windhoek High School.
After school, he attained a BCom Law degree as well as an honours degree in economics from the University of Stellenbosch.
He reflects on his career journey and mentions that a key focus for him was to get involved and make a contribution in areas beyond his immediate scope of work.
He placed his focus on learning and upskilling himself to deliver more than what is required.
“I started my career journey as part of an internship programme where after I joined a graduate programme. My role evolved between different areas in financial services in different countries and organisations.
“I eventually settled back in Namibia in 2011, where I was involved in a number of roles with different organisations, both locally and regionally. In 2018 I was appointed head of FNB Commercial and Business banking, before I took up my new role as RMB Namibia CEO,” he says.
One of Chapman’s proudest moments was when he qualified as a pilot. He sees himself in the next five years as playing an integral role in growing the RMB business.
One of the challenges he faced during his career was finding the correct balance between work, play, family, faith, health and fitness. “During certain stages of one’s life, different areas of priority are important. Finding the correct balance is ultimately critical!’’
What a typical day for Chapman looks like is waking up early and preparing for his day before dropping off the kids at school. Most of his time is typically filled with client and team engagement and when the day is over, which is usually late, he heads home to spend time with his wife and children. As for keeping active, he tries to maintain an exercise regime even though he has a very busy schedule.
Chapman is very enthusiastic about aviation and is an avid pilot in his spare time, which is where he really feels the freedom of the sky.
Farming is another hobby which he enjoys spending time on with his family. “My family has been in farming for many generations and having grown up on a farm, it remained part of me. As a family we farm with Beefmaster, Braford and Hereford cattle and work hard to improve the genetics, which remains an exciting part of my weekends,” he says.
One thing he would tell his younger self is not to take yourself so seriously, life is just too short. Growing up, some of his fondest moments were spending many hours and days with his brothers, playing all sorts of games, sports and activities.
The advice he has for young people is to set great, big and audacious goals for themselves. “It takes a certain level of determination to be successful. At times the journey will be difficult and you may struggle to find the right level of motivation but don’t give up. Consider different options, look at different ways to achieve whatever goals it is you want to pursue! You will get there!,” he says.
