The Pupkewitz Megabuild Graduate Programme initiative is aimed at supporting newly graduated students to gain work experience, which will serve as an additional advantage for furthering their careers. Pupkewitz Megabuild believes in developing talent and enabling people to reach their best potential possible. In order to remain competitive in the Namibian market, the company has implemented various training and development initiatives to develop the organisation.

The graduate programme, which is open for those younger than 25, is one of the important initiatives the company believes is key to organisational success. The company believes in the development of the nation and that the Namibian youth show a lot of potential and is happy to invite them to join the organisation to make a positive change.

The first intake to the programme took place in 2019 with 14 graduates, while the second took place in 2020 with 15 graduates. The third programme in 2021 boasted 25 graduates. In total, the company has had 54 graduates in the past three years, where 21 are still employed by Megabuild. For 2022, the programme has been extended from six to nine months, giving the graduate more learning time and experience. This allows the graduates to be better equipped for their future careers.

Pupkewitz Megabuild offers free training, monthly allowance, nine months on-the-job experience in a building merchant environment and learning opportunities across the country for graduates.

Assessing progress

Each graduate gets a portfolio of evidence on their very first day. This portfolio consists of a rotational programme which graduates will have to follow and allows them to gain experience in various critical functions and departments of the organisation. After each rotation, the graduates are assessed through performance discussions with their managers. The programme also includes more formal assessments to test the general retail knowledge of the graduates.

A graduate who was enrolled on the programme in 2019, Paulina Kornelius, said the programme was rewarding with consistent growth opportunities and unwavering support from line management.

The programme aims to create an experience where all graduates have the opportunity to add value to their careers. Thus, it was designed to accommodate candidates in areas specific to their field of study. Successful graduates are placed in various positions, i.e. in fleet management, operations, IT, marketing, human resources, tendering and sales departments. The programme does not only offer employment and experience, but also a platform where young professionals can connect and grow their network.

Another graduate who was enrolled in the programme in 2020, Nathan Phiri said it helped him gain more than just knowledge. “I gained hands-on experience and learnt that this is something I am not only good at, but love,” he said.

The application process takes place online. Graduates who completed their studies in any BCom related field such as business administration, finance, marketing, human resources, economics, logistics and supply chain management are encouraged to apply. Applications will be open from 27 September to 10 October.
