The Walvis Bay Shack Dwellers Association received a brick making machine last week.
Deputy mayor of Walvis Bay Hilka Erastus said that the municipality has allocated 100 serviced erven in Kuisebmond and 268 unserviced erven in Narraville. Another 700 unserviced erven is earmarked for the Shack Dwellers Federation in Extension 11 of Narraville.
“It is our hope that this brick making machine will add value to the process of erecting the many homes that will be constructed on these erven and on Farm 37.”
Governor of the Erongo region Cleophas Mutjivikua said through this machine the lower category income people can now house themselves, by building decent houses (brick houses) for themselves.
“I hope this machine is put to good use. I would like to urge the municipality to also get involved and make sure the bricks made are up to standard.”
He promised to visit as soon as the Shack Dwellers start making the bricks, and said if the machine is put to good use, there will be more machines donated.
Naftali Utoni, chairperson of the Shack Dwellers Association, expressed his gratitude towards the governor and the municipality who made it possible for them to receive the machine.
“We will form a committee who will be in charge of the use of this machine, and we will make sure it is used for its intended purpose.”
He also said that people should refrain from grabbing land illegally. He furthermore asked that Namibian companies assist them in any way they can.
“We need all the help we can get. We do not need any more shacks. Shack fires are destroying our possessions and we are losing precious lives.”
