Smoke, fun and fire at Tony Rust

Motorsport
For the past few decades the Tony Rust racetrack has been the prestige venue for all things racing and come tomorrow this will be no different.

Whether it be drag racing, circuits or karts, this is the place to be for a superior adrenaline rush as drivers take each other on in the arena.

But racing is not all that the track will be offering. Renowned Namibian race car driver and chairperson of the Windhoek Motor Club (WMC), Richard Slamet, announced that a motor expo will be hosted as well.

“On Friday and Saturday, the biggest motor sport show ever to hit our soil will be awaiting Namibians,” Slamet said.

In association with Big Boy Racing, WMC aims to create the opportunity for locals to see more than 100 motor sport cars on exhibition and interact with their favourite motoring personalities.

“There is no better way than this, to get behind the intricacies of the sport and the process of putting these vehicles together,” the chairperson said.

In addition to the exhibition, WMC will attempt to provide four events over the weekend that will be a first for the venue.

“The launch of the 1/8 mile drags and spinning will happen (today) with a gymkhana and drifting on Saturday. For the drifting we have a special show with 7 drifters making their way from South Africa from Team F-Rix joining myself and local boy Willie van der Merwe, to put up the biggest drift show ever in Namibia.

“Spectators will see a cloud of smoke rising to the west with the action these guys promise to put up. This is one not to be missed. And as a bonus the public can join the drift show in a 'suicide run' for a total of 3 laps around the oval,” Slamet added, joking that this is more exhilarating than any fun fair ride can be.

The expo will open today at 12:00 with the drags starting at 18:00 and followed by the spinning.

On Saturday the gates will open to the public from 10:00 with the gymkhana starting at 16:00, followed by the drift suicide runs and ending off with a spectacular drifting performance.

Live DJs will entertain the crowd throughout the day and food and beverages will be available throughout the weekend.

WMC thanks its sponsors Pupkewitz Toyota, Ster Kinekor, Tyre Rack, Revo Tuning, Autoboss Panelbeaters, Namibia Lubricants, Retief Sales Promotions, Bank Windhoek, Nam Auto, Ceiling Centre, Africa Alluminium Structural Systems and Mr&Mrs Smith.

For the expo, tickets will be available at the gate or in advance at Pick n Pay Stores or www.webtickets.com.na. For more information kindly contact Bradley at 081 332 4966 or Deon at 081 247 1522.
