Specialist medical village on the cards for Swakopmund

MDC Health Management Services and DDM Interactive E-Health will start the development of the Swakopmund specialist acute hospital and medical village on 1 October this year.

The project will be done in three phases.

Phase one will involve the construction of a 54-bed acute specialist hospital and a 26-unit nurses' residence at a value of N$150 million. The site is located on erf 17, which is next to the Henties Bay main road in the northern part of Swakopmund. The 1.5 hectare property was purchased by developers in 2014.

This hospital is part of a new concept of holistic integrated community care and will treat patients from all walks of life such as private overseas patients, local medical aid patients, state and indigent patients.

The hospital will consist of several features which create a great ethos and an environment which aids patients to recover faster. A non-profit health company will use crowd sourcing and donor funding to treat disadvantaged Namibians who are presently not cared for adequately.

The hospital will strive to create an environment where doctors and nurses would like to work and learn while providing patients with new levels of healthcare. The beds used at the hospital will be made of natural wood. The reception area will tell a story as the green and natural light along with timber furniture will create a fresh, welcoming environment for patients and staff members. Green filtered sunlight from skylights will have a healing and calming effect on patients and staff members alike.

The specialist units in the hospital will be headed by world-class international doctors. Local general practitioners and Namibian specialists are invited to practice in this facility to transfer knowledge, skills and surgical techniques, while a local nurses' training unit will train enrolled nurses.

Phase two of the development will be the construction of a medical village and specialist centres of excellence at the Rossmund golf estate. The 1.8 hectare commercial property was obtained in 2013. Phases one and two will be completed in October 2018.

It will consist of a spinal surgery unit, a gynaecological and fertility unit, a cancer and breast cancer unit, a stroke and Alzheimer's rehab unit, a hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty unit, a cancer pain and chronic pain treatment unit, a tropical and communicable diseases unit, a retina and macular degeneration unit and a diabetes management unit.

A 26-room greencare assisted living unit will also be constructed at the site. Phase two’s total value is estimated at N$90 million.

The final phase of the development will be the construction of 54 upmarket double bed and retirement apartments at the Rossmund Palms Springs and Rossmund golf course to the value of N$100 million. Phase three of the development will be completed in October 2019.

Curently 50% of the company is owned by South Africans. Namibian investors are needed to make up the other 50%. If you are willing to invest, email Ansie van der Merwe at [email protected].
