Sports and music festival in Usakos
Football, netball
The third edition of the annual Areva & Engen One Stop Usakos sports festival will be held in Usakos from today until Sunday.
The football and netball tournament has been growing in popularity and is currently known as one of the mega entertainment events in the Erongo region.
A total of 16 teams participated in the first year of the tournament, whereas last year there was a significant increase to 26 football teams competing. The eventual winners Speed Fire FC from Omaruru beat Coastal Lions on penalties during the final.
Mr Hilifa Mbako, managing director of Areva Resources Namibia, once again expressed his excitement and gratitude in his keynote address that was delivered by Ms Christine de Klerk, the communications officer at Areva, during the official launch of the event.
“Sports, especially football, remain one of the vehicles that have moved many people out of their socio-economic challenges. It is against this background that Areva Namibia remains committed to assist communities for the betterment of their livelihoods.”
Mbako added: “We all have a responsibility, as individuals and collectively, to influence the lives and livelihoods of our fellow people.”
At the same occasion Ms Irene Simeon, owner of Engen One Stop Usakos, thanked the local community for their conduct during the event. She encouraged the locals to seize this opportunity and venture into entrepreneurial activities during the weekend of the festival. “Let us start planning on how best we can make business and earn something in return from it.”
She expressed more gratitude to her staff members and the clients that are associated with the Engen brands.
During the same event, Mr D. van Wyk, the deputy mayor of Usakos, told those in attendance that the town council is already contemplating on how they can best associate themselves with the event as of 2018 and make it even bigger. It could even mean having a Trade and Enterprise Expo during the days leading up to the sports and entertainment festival.
“This event is the pride of Usakos. We as the town council are exploring the options on how best we can associate ourselves with this event. The discussions are already in motion,” Van Wyk said
The deputy mayor also handed over football equipment which were donated by the town’s mayor, Hon. Aksel Mwafangeyo, in his personal capacity.
Areva and Engen Namibia jointly handed over cheques totalling N$60 000 in cash, whereas Certume Energy and Erongo RED also committed N$10 000 each towards the event.
