The second leg of the Standard Bank and OTB Khomas-Hochland X-Trails which was held at Avis Dam in Windhoek last Sunday proved to be the biggest trail run event in the country with over 600 participating in the annual sporting event.
The Avis X-trails saw children as young as four years old participating in the event that consisted of a 7 km and 15 km trail, with the option of either running or walking along the scenic hiking trails on the dam.
Mercia Geises, Standard Bank's Head of Personal and Business Banking who also participated in the 7 km hike, said she was very pleased to see the turnout because it was indicative of people's commitment to living a healthier lifestyle.
“As a financial institution, Standard Bank understands the importance sport plays in the physical wellbeing of those taking part. At Standard Bank we are committed to ensuring that Namibians adopt a healthy lifestyle by aligning ourselves with the development of various sports in the country through sponsorships,” she explained.
The Bank handed over an impressive sponsorship of over N$500 000 towards the event.
OTB Sport's Yvonne Brinkman said she was elated to see so many people participating this time around and their participation aided in making the trails one of the biggest trail running events in the country.
“What stood out for me were two things: the good mix of Namibian people and the vast spectrum of people. Men and women of various ages, top athletes and social athletes, families and friends all participated in this event. It was a very social event and we had a good atmosphere,” Brinkman said.
The Standard Bank Avis X-trails also saw runners/hikers who were first timers at the Farm Godeis trails returning to the trails.
One such runner was Nathalie Alexander, who said that the first trails hooked her and she could not help but return.
“I really enjoyed the first X-trails I participated in at Farm Godeis, so I decided to come back. It's a great experience because it gives me time to be in nature, it gives me time to unwind and relax,” she explained.
She said that she found this leg of the trails much easier than the first-one, but was eager to try the third leg of the trails and hoped it would challenge her physical fitness.
“I urge everyone who hasn't tried the trails to participate, because it is a great experience. However, I encourage you to train a bit because walking or running for 7 km or 15 km is no joke,” Alexander said.
Fellow sophomore X-trailer, Puye Nghiwanapo, shared Alexander's sentiments, stressing that successfully completing the earlier Farm Godeis trail boosted her confidence. So she decided to return.
“The X-trails not only challenge your body, but also your mental resolve. I try to live a healthy lifestyle and the trails make me feel that I am on the right track in that healthier lifestyle journey,” she said.
She also urged anyone who hasn't tried it to take part, because it is a rewarding challenge that is good for them in the long run. She too said she was determined to participate in the next leg of the X-trails.
The third and final leg of the X-trail will take place on 14 October in Swakopmund. This new addition of the X-trails is aimed at encouraging more people in the coastal regions to participate.
