Star teacher of the week

Mariselle Stofberg
Eunice Sinalumbu - Khomastura High School

Eunice Sinalumbu is a life skills teacher for grade eight and 11 and an English teacher for grade 11.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I was inspired by my English second language teacher Miss Chaka when I was in high school because she was an intriguing teacher and loved to encourage leaners. Also, the love of children and imparting them with knowledge so that they make a difference in their lives.

What were your aspirations when you were younger?

My dad and mom were my inspiration. They made sure I didn't lack anything from food, love, unity, shelter and guidance, etc. My late brother Chika Maila was also a teacher and he inspired me the most, especially being the first teacher in the family.

Can you tell us more about your teaching journey?

My journey as a wife, mother, teacher and student is quite an amazing thing because it's not like a walk in the park. It takes courage, determination, hard work and commitment to achieve a set goal in life. I have endured hardship throughout my journey of success but I have never given up because I became a blessing to others I've met along the way. I have met strangers who have become friends and family and I thank God for that. I'm looking forward to inspiring more people in my life because it's a great legacy to leave behind.

What motivates you to get up every morning to go to work?

My immediate family motivates me to go to work every morning. My husband and our four sons are always the reason I wake up early to deliver so that I provide them with food on the table. Additionally, I have a passion for my work and my learners. My colleagues at work are a cherry on the cake.

What is one of the biggest lessons you’ve learnt from one of your learners?

The biggest lesson I have learnt from one of my learners is to never give up regardless of one's background and circumstances. Always stay focused and win the battle. Resilience is the order of the day.

What is your favourite place to visit in Namibia and what is your favourite book to read?

Swakopmund is that place because of its beauty. The calmness and breeze of the ocean makes the brain relax. It’s breathtaking and serene. God's perfect scenery is there.

My favourite book is the book of life, which is the Bible, because it has everything in it and one cannot get enough of it. It comforts my soul when I'm down and when I want to give up. I use it when I counsel my learners too.
