The Windhoek Lager Tournament of Champions and WGCC Medal Championship is part of a series of competitions that takes place over the entire year and culminates in a match between two teams tomorrow and Sunday at the Windhoek Country Club.

The Windhoek Lager Monthly Medley, as it is called, consists of eight events with players choosing to play either medal or stableford format.

Players are allocated points based on their position in each format. The player with the most points in the medal format at the end of the series will be crowned the Windhoek Lager Medal Champion of the year.

In order to qualify for victory, a player must play at least five of the eight events, while the best six events will be counted. The Windhoek Lager Medal Champion will be announced and awarded this Sunday at the prize-giving of the Tournament of Champions.

A separate order of merit is kept based on the stableford points achieved by all players in each event. This order of merit is then used to determine the top 24 players in the series. These players are divided into two teams, one led by the club captain (Cor Beuke) and the other led by the chairman (Corneels Jafta).

The two teams will play each other in a mixed matchplay format tomorrow and Sunday to determine the team champions of the club for the year. Hence, it is called the Tournament of Champions.

Windhoek Lager is sponsoring the series of events, while the Tournament of Champions is also supported by Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino.

This type of event has the potential for expansion to other clubs nationally and even internationally, something the sponsor will consider after successful completion of the 2016 event at WGCC.

The format for the Tournament of Champions will be two rounds of mixed medal matchplay played over two days. The first nine holes will be betterball; the second nine combined medal, which concludes the first day of play. The third nine will be foursomes and the final nine will be singles.

A total of 30 points are available and a team must win 15 ½ points to win the team championship. In the case of a tie at the end of normal play, the two captains will choose one player each to play off in sudden death to determine a winner.

WALVIS BAY HIDDEN PARTNER

The Indongo Toyota sponsored golf day last weekend at the Walvis Bay Golf Club drew a top field of 43 players, even though there were concerns that the wind would blow.

Let it be stated that the wind did blow and messed with some scores, but then there were a few who were able to brave the elements and come in with top scores.

The format of hidden partner left a few of the top scores in suspense as there were a few scores of 27, 29 and one even at 26. However sanity prevailed as sponsor Dewald Els made the draw.

The winners on the day were Chris Bothma (42 points and a new handicap) and Willie van Zyl (36 points). Second place went to oom Pikkie Champion and Gert Olivier junior on 74 points. Third place went to Francois Champion and first timer Karl Beukes losing on the count-out, also on 74.

Special mention must be made to David Peake and Karl Beukes who played their first competition at the club. Karl must really think this is an easy game, winning a prize on his first attempt. He did however score 37 points on his own.

Chris Tempo won the closest to the pin prize and Luandre Duvenhage won the longest drive.

• This weekend is the last for the year of the PISCS Monthly Medal tournaments. The winner of winners will be played next month and more details will follow.

OMEYA OPEN

Last weekend''s Omeya Open was sponsored by Windhoek Lager for the first time. The 2016 Omeya Open is also one of five qualifying events for the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket golf championship to be played in Windhoek in May 2017.

Once again the event pulled the biggest field on the Namibian Amateur Golf Union calendar with 90 players teeing it up with participants coming as far as from Tsumeb, Otjiwarongo, Mariental, Swakop and Walvis Bay.

Local Omeya home owner Justinus van der Westhuizen carded a 74 on round one with a 1 under round of 71 on Sunday.

Van der Westhuyzen''s closest competitor was Abrie van Wyk, also a home owner, who carded rounds of 73 and 76 putting him in sole second position, 4 shots behind Van der Westhuyzen.

Windhoek Lager put together a spread of Titleist prizes which were very well received by all the prize winners. Manager of Sponsorships & Events and Brand of Namibia Breweries Limited, Ian Stevenson, was so chuffed by the turnout and by how well the event was organised that he committed to also sponsor the 2017 Omeya Open.

The golf club management would like to thank Windhoek Lager for coming on board to sponsor its Open and for signing a two-year sponsorship deal to brand the club''s fleet of 30 golf carts. Omeya is extremely excited of what the future holds, with a very exciting 2017 season ahead.
