The new CX-5: Exceptional
Seductively stylish, stunning to drive
Yochanaan Coetzee
Mazda’s second-generation CX-5 SUV has landed in Namibia and it’s an absolute cracker.
While its first offering was an understated and, dare I say, underappreciated triumph, the new CX-5, which is firmly rooted in that winning formula, has undergone a transformation so radical that it’s sure to claim its place in the sun this time around.
With refinements in every nook and at every level in terms of styling, driving dynamics and technology, the CX-5 was clearly developed with greatness in mind.
New look
In terms of styling, there’s no way you could not love its distinctive and dramatic updates.
At both the front, the back and everywhere in between, the CX-5 has been cleaned up, massaged out and sculpted to create an emotive and engaging outward appearance.
The new front-end has been completely reshaped and now boasts a breathtaking version of its predecessors. Prominent, precise and almost pouting, the sculpted orifice is underlined with chrome, filled with diamond-style grille elements and flanked by striking, redesigned LED headlights. In the Soul Red Crystal colour I had for the day, it can only be described as enchanting.
The bonnet also takes no a more sculpted appearance and together, these designs elements make one thing clear: The CX-5 is coming for its segment’s crown.
The rear has been been modernised and out of its cleaned up curves burst these sharp, again, sculpted tail lights.
In terms of onlooker appeal, the CX-5 is a definite head-turner and somehow manages to have a presence that punches much higher than its weight. Especially on the 19-inch alloys.
New feel
The interior resembles that of the outgoing model, but received some seriously VIP treatment as it now boasts shiny accents which meet wooden-look inlays.
The centre air vents add a chrome centerpiece to the dash and the minimalist layout is only otherwise interrupted by a 7-inch screen through which you access your infotainment. I have to mention the 10-speaker Bose sound system, because it alone is reason enough to hunt near the top of the model range.
The seats are sublime and support you extremely well. The infotainment interface is in the centre console and, again, lend a feel of unencumbered luxury and ergonomics to the cockpit, so too the nifty new Heads-up Display.
Zoom-Zooming
The 2017 line-up gains a new derivative, expanding the range from six to seven models.
The local engine line-up comprises three options SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre, 2.5-litre petrol as well as SKYACTIV-D 2.2-litre diesel units. All 2.0-litre engine derivatives are available with both manual and automatic transmissions, with the Dynamic derivative now offering an auto option.
The 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are available with an auto transmission and I’ll tell you off the bat, the 2.2-litre diesel Akera with 6-speed auto-box I drove, felt like the cool Asian cousin from a predominantly German family. The levels of material comfort, the interfaces, ride quality even the pace was impressively "schnell".
This vehicle also debuts the new SkyActiv-Vehicle Dynamics vehicle motion control technologies, or G-Vectoring Control for us regular folk . This software-based system controls body roll for better handling, believe you me you can feel it.
The CX-5 can sense steering inputs and can restrict torque output to shift vehicle weight forward slightly, planting the front tyres and helping you carve your desired line. The Lane Keep Assist system on the vehicle performs well and course-corrects you with a little torque to keep you from straying.
On a short sprint through a twisty mountain road, the CX-5 dazzled with her poise, even when pushed. Updates to the suspension and powertrain make for a smooth, comfortable ride.
The 4-cylinder 2.2-litre DE Akera Auto, which pumps out 129 kW and 420 Nm as smooth as you’ll ever hear it, is a joy to drive and though 0 - 100 will take you 9.5 seconds, a mixture of the CX-5’s stance, driving position and sweet engine note makes it much more entertaining than you’d expect.
Gear changes are smooth, very smooth, and digging down deep to overtake is really not necessary, as the autobox rarely left me searching for an appropriate gear.
With raft of active and passive safety features from Smart City Brake to a tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, EBD and DSC, you have everything at your disposal to keep your CX-5 in pristine condition.
The Mazda CV-5 comes with a 3-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside assistance.
Please, don’t wait. Go drive this spectacular vehicle or, at the very least, take your kids to go and look at it. It’s that beautiful.
