Amerika se president, wat gister in Israel aangekom het nadat hy die naweek in Saoedi-Arabië was, sê hy het nuwe redes vir hoop dat vrede en stabiliteit in die Midde-Ooste bereik kan word.

Op die tweede been van sy eerste buitelandse besoek sedert hy president geword het, het pres. Donald Trump van Amerika afsonderlike samesprekings met Israel se eerste minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, en die Palestynse president, Mahmoud Abbas, gevoer.

Gistermiddag het Trump by die klaagmuur gebid en die kerk van die Heilige Graf in Jerusalem besoek. Vandag reis hy na Betlehem in die besette Wesoewer.

Netanyahu en sy vrou, Sara, asook pres. Reuven Rivlin en lede van die Israeliese kabinet was op Tel Aviv se Ben Gurion-lughawe om Trump en sy gevolg op die rooi tapyt te verwelkom ná die eerste regstreekse vlug van Riyadh na Israel. “Gedurende my reise die afgelope dae het ek nuwe redes vir hoop gevind,” het Trump in 'n kort toespraak met sy aankoms gesê.

“Ons het 'n rare geleentheid voor ons om veiligheid en stabiliteit en vrede na hierdie streek en sy mense te bring, terrorisme te verslaan en 'n toekoms van harmonie, voorspoed en vrede te skep, maar ons sal almal moet kry om saam te werk. Daar is nie 'n ander uitweg nie,” het hy gesê.

Trump se besoek vind plaas in die skadu van probleme tuis waar hy sukkel om die skandaal oor die afdanking byna twee weke gelede van die FBI-direkteur, James Comey, onder beheer te bring. Sy buitelandse besoek loop Saterdag ná besoeke aan die Vatikaan, Brussel en Sicilië ten einde.

Netanyahu het op die lughawe gesê Israel deel Trump se verbintenis tot vrede, maar het ook sy regse regering se politieke en veiligheidseise aan die Palestyne, insluitende die erkenning van Israel as Joodse staat, herhaal. - Nampa/Reuters
