Namibia Media Holdings (NMH) last year launched its first virtual career expo called ‘Career VX’, which is aimed at speaking to university students on the different careers they can take on.

This year, the expo was live-streamed on the My Zone and Careers Hub Facebook pages on 12 August.

The theme for this year’s expo was ‘Unfolding Your Skill Set’. The theme mainly spoke to high school leavers, graduates and those who are looking for bursaries, internships and want to redirect their careers.

Institutions such as First National Bank Namibia (FNB), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN), Petrofund, NamibRe, Old Mutual and many more attended the expo.

A skill set refers to the range of skills, experiences and abilities necessary to acquire and perform a job.

The 2021 career expo featured professionals in very different lines of work who gave the viewers a deeper and better understanding into their careers and they entail on a day-to-day basis.

Soft vs hard skills

When it comes to ‘Unfolding Your Skill Set’, there are a few types of skill sets. At the top of the list are soft skills, which are interpersonal or ‘people’ skills. They are difficult to quantify and relate to a person’s personality and ability to work with others and come across more clearly during an interview.

Secondly, there are hard skills, which is having specific knowledge and abilities required for a job. They are quantifiable and teachable and can easily be listed on the resume.

Thirdly, there are transferable skills, which apply to many different career fields and include soft skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, or hard skills such as writing and math ability.

Lastly, there are job-specific employment skills, which are skills necessary for a particular position.

My Zone has covered many careers in completely different fields. These include:

• Medical

• Science

• Business

• Arts and social sciences

• Tourism and hospitality

• Sport and fitness

• Law

• Agriculture

• Fashion, beauty and aesthetics

• Non-traditional careers

“We should understand that career guidance is important, and we cannot do away with that. High school learners should be exposed to all kinds of careers or rather have the ambition to do research and visit institutions which they find interesting. High school learners are not doing enough to unfold their skill set and it should start from the first day you enter your high school gate,” Michelline Nawatises, the coordinator for the Career VX, said.
