KARIBIB – Local authorities should make affordable land available to entities to build houses, the minister of urban and rural development, Erastus Uutoni, has urged.

“The roleplayers responsible for freeing our residents from homelessness are all around us,” Uutoni said Wednesday during a site handover for the construction of 72 houses at Karibib.

“It really cannot be correct that government-owned institutions established with the sole purpose of building affordable houses are struggling to acquire land from local authorities,” he said.

The project, valued at N$21.7 million, was established through a partnership between the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) and the private sector through Top International Engineering Corporation and Velocity Trading Enterprises.

An additional four houses valued at N$1.6 million have also been constructed in Omaruru through the same joint venture.

Seven months

The deputy chairperson of the NHE, Aisha Isaaks, said it is through such partnerships that more is achieved with less through commitment.

“I equally recognise the important support of the line ministry, as well as the role of the financial institutions who will advance home loans to some of our clients,” Isaaks added.

Karibib mayor Titus Nabot explained that the town is currently in transition in terms of development. This infrastructure development is just a token of the efforts that are being made by the council to bring about housing development.

The general manager of Top International Engineering Corporation, Ran Zhiyong, said they hope the completion of the project will significantly address the shortage of housing in the Karibib area.

“Our company has already set up offices in Karibib. The project management unit is also in place and all other preparatory works are ongoing as scheduled,” Zhiyong said.

The project is expected to be completed in seven months. - Nampa
