Volleyballers thrash it out
THE sixth round of the DTS/Maerua SuperSpar beach volleyball series took place last Saturday at DTS in Windhoek.
With cloudy skies and hot temperatures, the tournament attracted 20 teams in three categories: four-a-side mixed (social), two-a-side men and ladies. Four ladies teams battled it out.
This time, last tournament’s surprise runner-up team, Julia Laggner/Corinna Wahl (photo) were beaten by current second-ranked team Simone von Wietersheim/ Sabine Pampe, who beat them in two straight sets, 21-16/21-16.
Von Wietersheim/ Pampe qualified for the final where they were beaten by Anita Kinder/Karin Curschmann 21- 19/21-17, who managed to stay top of the log in the overall standings. Laggner/Wahl finished 3rd, beating Leigh Ann Dunn/Liza Swartz. The first ranked men’s team, Mwita Sikopo/ Rector Mbeha, proved that they are the team to beat.
They did not lose a single set and won the tournament comfortably, beating Walter Farmer/Jerome de Wee in two sets. No. 2 seeded team Michael de Koe/Ruben Delie finished 3rd.
A very competitive 4-a-side category saw great volleyball action amongst the eight teams taking part. In the first semi-final, old rivals OTB and Jumpin’ Potatoes faced each other and again the game was decided in three sets.
OTB proved that they play best when under pressure and managed to reach their fifth consecutive final.
The second semi-final saw The Farmers Attack playing a very strong team of The Uncardables, who beat the Farmers 2-0. In a thrilling final, which had to be stopped a few times due to heavy wind gusts with rain, OTB and The Uncardables won a set each and a third tie break set had to decide.
The Uncardables won 15-11 to take their first tournament victory, while OTB lost their first final this year, admitting that The Uncardable were just too strong.
