As we commemorate World Aids Day today, My Zone asked members of the public if they think Aids is getting as much attention as it used to. Here is what they had to say.

No, it's like we forgot about it, or just accept it, maybe because there are medications and condoms. It has become a common disease; we totally ignore it. It has been really a very long time since one heard something about Aids campaigns or Aids-related deaths.

I don't think Aids gets the same kind of attention as it used to. Aids still affects a lot of people's lives and our future peers might be at risk because they were not made aware of the circumstances and vulnerability brought by this syndrome.

I would say no, because if you look back to when I was in grade four, we were genuinely educated about Aids, compared to today. Now it seems very taboo and outdated to talk about something such as HIV and Aids. The health system should implement a new strategy to approach and educate people about Aids.

No, it doesn’t. Awareness campaigns to educate people about Aids have reduced significantly. In fact, they are non-existent with the exception of the ‘Smart Cut’ campaign from the ministry of health and social services which doesn’t focus entirely on Aids but touches on the subject. In Namibia, World Aids Day is still celebrated on 1 December but it’s poorly attended with no clear messages.

No, because Aids was a big issue that needed most of our attention before it could get out of hand. Of course Aids is still prevalent and slowly killing people but a lot of awareness and education was provided back then. As the world evolves, new diseases come into play and we tend to forget about Aids.

Yes, and at the same time also no, because in schools learners still do learn about Aids. In a lot of school textbooks there are still topics regarding Aids. On the other hand, I do not really see as many awareness programmes as in the past. At some point I totally forgot about Aids.
