What is connective tissue massage?

Connective tissue massage (CTM) is just one of the many advanced techniques used by therapeutic massage therapists. The development of CTM therapy is credited to Elizabeth Dicke, who had a medical condition in her legs that caused them to stay cold and discoloured, and develop gangrene. One day while doing stretches in her lower back and legs, she noticed a warm and tingling sensation in her legs.

When she continued the stretches, the problems in her legs gradually started to improve. She began to develop a massage technique based on her observations with two medical doctors, Kohlrausch and Teirich-Leube. This technique eventually came to be called connective tissue massage.

CTM relies on a fairly simple concept, even though the technique is quite complex. Our body is made up of many different tissues, including bone and muscle. To keep everything connected and attached, the spaces between each fibre, each muscle and around each blood vessel are filled with a delicate yet tough connective tissue. Connective tissue massage treats the body as a whole instead of focusing on individual areas at a time. In this manner the surrounding connective tissue as well as the problem site are treated. During a typical CTM therapy session, the therapeutic massage therapist will focus on releasing tension from the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia with deep intense strokes.

CTM therapy works by physical breaking down adhesions in muscle, tendons and ligaments. These adhesions occur due to chronic muscle tensions or injury and can result in blocked circulation, pain, limited mobility and inflammation. Connective tissue massage therapy restores the length and flexibility of the tissue by normalizing it and by improving the strength and overall health of the entire connective tissue system.

Oil or lotion is not usually used in this form of massage therapy and with the connective tissue being so delicate, it can be a rather sensitve and sore treatment. CTM has different benefits, including the relief of chronic tension and constipation, treating migraines and tension headaches, alleviating painful symptoms of osteoarthritis, fubromyalgia and muscle spasms.

Your therapeutic massage therapist will compile a thorough treatment plan to help you with your specific problem. Connective tissue massage will often be used in conjunction with other techniques, such as trigger point therapy or deep tissue massage, depending on what you need.
