Why is the constitution important?

Following the commemoration of Constitution Day, The Zone asked learners from Chairman Mao Zedong High School what the constitution means to them and why it is important.

1) Alvaro Ngonga:

I think the constitution is important because it envelopes our rights to be able to live freely in our country. Without the constitution as guide people would do awful things to each other without any consequences. Things us stealing and killing would happen more often and there wouldn’t be any consequences so I am really grateful for the constitution.

2) Jan Mushimba

Today we celebrate rights that protect us and keep us safe, which I am very thankful for. I cannot imagine a world where we do not have a constitution in place because if there was no constitution many children would be violated and unsafe. However, fortunately we have a constitution that looks out for us as young people.

3) Shaniqua Louw

This day is very important for everyone, especially the youth, because it is a reminder for us young people to engage and discuss our rights and freedoms that have been enlisted in the Namibian constitution.

4) Refilwe Kaposambo

Constitution day is a very important day for us as the Namibian youth to commemorate and understand because it means we can take the time to reflect on the basic human rights that we have in Namibia.

5) Theodor Uushona

What is most important to me about the constitution and the day we take out to celebrate it is the clause on children’s rights, particularly when it comes to education because many people do not know that children have the right to education.

6) Angel Nauta

The constitution is important because it gives us guidance on how to behave as a Namibian citizen. Also, I think it is very important that everyone knows what their country’s constitution entails because it will contribute to the development of a country if everyone knows what is expected of them and what their rights are.
