Rössmund Golf Course played host to the 11th Hollard Insurance Ladies Coastal Open last weekend.

A field of 22 ladies from Omeya, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay and Rössmund entered, being an official event on the NALGU calendar – there was the additional incentive of merit list points.

The tournament this year was also the first leg of the 2017 Namibian Breweries Green Jacket series. Play commenced on Saturday morning in excellent weather conditions: overcast with a slight breeze coming in from the north, on a well prepared course with the greens running fast and firm.

Wilna Bredenhann, having just returned from a stint on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa, posted a first round score of 81 gross, finishing four shots ahead of her nearest rival Wilma van der Merwe.

Hot and sunny was the order of the day on Sunday with a promise of some wind when the players reached the back nine. Bredenhann managed to keep her cool, shooting a 84 gross to secure the championship by 10 shots over Van der Merwe.

As always the players were showered with lots of surprises both on and off the course by sponsor Hollard. The tournament was rounded off with a fantastic prize-giving function which included lunch and some information from NALGU representative Brenda Lens on where ladies golf is today and their ideas for the future.

Lens made mention of all the country's young golfers (Andrea Vermaak, Jessica Dreesbeimdieke, Caro Els, Letitia Brink and Bonita Bredenhann) who have spread their wings to pastures new and wished them well.

Organisers expressed a big word of thanks to Diffie, Berndine and the rest of the Hollard team for making this event something special and definitely the highlight on the women's golf calendar.

The results:

Overall gross winner (champion) – Wilna Bredenhann 165;

Best gross: 1 Wilma van der Merwe 175; 2 Adri Pienaar 179.

Best nett: 1 Angie Lohmann 153; 2 Brenda Lens 156.

Stableford winners: 1 Gaby Adams 69 points; 2 Zelda Nel 66; 3 Monika Schoedel 59; 4 Marina Loubser 56; 5 Caro du Plessis 51.

CHARITY GOLF DAY ENTRIES CLOSING

Langer Heinrich Uranium mine will be hosting its 6th annual Charity Golf day at the Rössmund course near Swakopmund on Saturday, 4th March.

To date, N$657 550 has been raised through the event, with nine different child-centred charities within Swakopmund and Walvis Bay benefiting since the event's inception in 2012.

The tournament format will be a three-ball alliance, with scramble drive on all holes, two scores to count on all par 4's and 5's and three scores to count on all par 3's. Playing off official handicap, maximum unofficial handicap allowed of 24.

A team entry costs N$3 000, whereas with N$5 000, you can enter two teams. With a maximum of 36 teams allowed, the event also provides excellent networking opportunities with corporate Namibia.

At this stage only 12 spots are still available. The deadline for entries is today, 10 February. Companies may also bring their business to the golf course, by sponsoring one of the 18 holes. A hole sponsorship goes for N$1 000.

Last year, the tournament raised N$145 000. The Walvis Bay Children and Family Centre (WBCFC) received N$80 000 to procure an oven to secure a regular income through the sale of bread to neighbouring communities as well as to supply their own bread for their feeding scheme, thereby reducing their own costs.

Another N$65 000 was used to procure school uniforms for 125 vulnerable children from all public schools in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

Mark Barnard, team captain of defending champions Ricoh Namibia, said his team is ready to defend their title.

“Apart from making a difference with their contribution, organisations can use this great opportunity to foster relationships by inviting their clients to participate,” he said. Last time his team walked away with prizes valued at N$10 000, sponsored by Danste Industrial and a floating trophy sponsored by Eco Tech.

This year's event promises to be bigger and better. Even the team finishing last will be walking away with awesome prizes.
