SMIG Supermarket, Wholesale and Bottle Store in Karibib are part of the Graser family for the past 53 years.
Ten years ago, the family acquired the Engen service station and turned it into the favourite stop where you can stretch your legs on your journey en route to the coast.
Three generations ago, Walter and Iris Graser arrived in Karibib along with their three children in 1956.
They moved from their farm near Kalkrand and decided to establish their own shop.
They expanded the business four years later by incorporating Roseman & Kronewitter.
SMIG Supermarket opened its doors in 1966 and was one of the first self-service supermarkets in Namibia at the time.
Their eldest son, Ingulf Sonhi, who was stationed in South Africa, moved back to take over the family business from his parents who retired in 1986.
During his time he expanded the supermarket by constructing the SMIG Wholesale in 1996.
Sohni’s son, Kai Graser and his wife, Doro, joined the family business, which is now thriving with the addition of a bakery and butchery, in April 2009.
This family business employs 32 people working in the supermarket, wholesaler and at the service station.
The Corner Bakery provides fresh bread, rolls, pies and pastries daily.
