NamPower endorses continental skills
NamPower holds hands with NTA through sponsorship
The importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has been illuminated by NamPower through the sponsorship of the upcoming WordSkills Africa competition that will take place in Swakopmund from 28 March to 2 April in association with the Namibian Training Association (NTA).
“The NTA and NamPower have had a long and positive relationship as both institutions believe in the promotion of benefits as well as need for skilled professionals through grass-roots community projects, skill competitions and knowledge exchange,” stated the acting CEO of NTA, Muvatera Ndjoze-Siririka, at the handover ceremony that took place at the NamPower head office.
The NTA facilitated Namibia’s initial participation in the international WorldSkills competition that took place in the United Kingdom in partnership with the ministry of higher education in 2011. NamPower’s involvement supersedes financial aid, as two NamPower trainees have previously participated in the international competition in years 2015 and 2017 in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
The sponsorship of N$250 000.00 is set to facilitate the upcoming event which is going to be staged on the African continent for the second time. The sponsorship will cover a broad spectrum of specialised training, simulation configuration and support towards the event. The funds have been split into two portions to serve different purposes - N$150 000 will go towards logistics and training support in preparation of the event, and N$100 000 was contributed in cash.
The importance of the TVET sector as a developing key contributor for countries such as Namibia was emphasised by the CEO of NamPower, Fritz Jacobs. “In our country, where youth unemployment is high, the growth and support of technical education and vocational training can only lead to the creation of more opportunities and jobs, directly and indirectly,” Jacobs said.
He encouraged new TVET graduates and other university programme graduates to volunteer their newly acquired knowledge to organisations and institutions to build up the necessary skills related to specific sectors of the economy and their qualification or training in the hope that their CVs will display their newfound experience, thus increasing their chances at finding a job.
