The Oyetu Craft Innovation Competition concluded with its official award ceremony at the COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre last Thursday, where Martin Angula emerged as the winner. The event aimed to support creativity and entrepreneurship in the arts and crafts community.

Angula, from the Ohangwena region, secured first place and received N$5 000 to start his own business. He said that he will use the money to buy some of the tools he needs to create more unique designs.

“I've been in the industry for eight years, since 2015 after failing at school. When I started, I didn't really have the necessary tools, so I used a knife and a panga. At the level where I am now, I always enjoy making pots because they bring new ideas. I try to come up with new ideas that have never been seen, ideas that will shape the arts industry, raise the economy, and inspire others out there,” Angula said.

Jacky Gaingob, representing Erongo Governor Neville Andre, said that the Oyetu exhibition has grown over the years to become a beacon of artistic expression, providing a platform for both emerging and established artists to showcase their talents. “This growth is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of many individuals and organisations committed to nurturing the arts in our communities. Technologies, innovation and creativity are the main engines driving our society towards a better future.”

He addded that for students, technological innovations have made the studying process easy and accessible. Owing to modern gadgets and the internet, contemporary students have the possibility to find any scholarly source needed at any time. “Arts open doors to new opportunities, creating jobs and fostering tourism. In the face of the ever-evolving global tech landscape, it is imperative that we continue to support and invest in our artists and craftspeople. They are the innovators who can drive our cultural and economic growth. Their creativity cannot only enrich our lives but also contribute significantly to the region's identity and pride. I would like to commend all the participants for their outstanding work. Your creativity and dedication are truly inspiring.

“By supporting the arts, we are investing in a vibrant and dynamic community. Let us continue to foster an environment where creativity can flourish and where our artists and craftspeople can thrive. Let us cultivate a mindset of innovation by staying curious, encouraging collaboration, and continually seeking better solutions.”

According to Joram Shifa, the COSDEF Business Development and Marketing Coordinator, this will be an annual competition.

"The participants were chosen from 18 Oyetu groups across the country and this year we received applications from 67 participants of which only the ten most innovative ideas were selected to partake in the craft product innovation workshop this year. The invitation for applications was shared with our crafters in May and the 10 finalists were selected inthe first week of June. The workshop officially started 24 June and continued until 4 July 2024."

The competition was open to all of craft groups, covering all disciplines, including wood carving, pottery, textiles, leathercraft, jewelry design, basket weaving, fashion design, beading, lino printing, macramé, and makalani carving.
