The Walvis Bay event of the annual Fun Walk in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) will once again be hosted at the Atlantis Sport Field, with this years theme being "White & Pink".

The Fun Walk will commence at 08:00 at Atlantis, from where participants will cross over to the esplanade promenade.

Nikki Titus, the chairperson of CAN in Walvis Bay, said that there will be a water point at the halfway stop. " We will also be selling coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cupcakes, brötchens with delicious fillings as well as T-shirts and buffs.”

She explained the aim is to raise funds for all cancer patients in Namibia. "We are also celebrating each cancer victory, remembering those that have lost the battle and showing our support for those that are still fighting the long battle against cancer.”

Tickets for the event are available, with entry fees for adults set at N$80 and N$40 for children under the age of 13. "All participants will receive medals as a token of appreciation and if we get enough sponsors, we will have a lucky draw,” Titus added.

The association is also planning on hosting another two big functions this year. "One will be a cocktail event and the other a morning tea party. We were also looking at another possible fun walk at the end of the year but we still have to consult on it. In order for us to host these events, we have to rely on sponsors, which we don't have a lot of,” said Titus.

She emphasized the importance of raising funds for CAN, saying that cancer is a disease that can affect any person, young or old. “It is one of the most expensive illnesses to treat. Not everyone can afford treatment and this is why we host these functions in order to raise funds for those who need it.”

According to the health ministry's Health Information System data of 2003/4-2007/8, cervical cancer is the most common cause of mortality in Namibia, followed by breast and prostate cancer. Cervical and breast cancers can be prevented and treated if detected early. A Pap smear examination is one of the tests used to screen for cervical abnormalities in women while breast examinations are performed to detect abnormalities at an early stage.

Titus urged sponsors to come on board and assist with raising funds for the Cancer Association, which is the umbrella body and advocates, educates and supports cancer patients and their families. "In order to sustain the programs initiated and executed daily, CAN is heavily dependent on the success of fundraising projects in addition to awareness and education drives. Several projects run throughout the year to sustain the fund, while others overlap with the educational cause to fight cancer."

Dr. Abraham Bernard May (1912 – 1993), a specialist surgeon and the first mayor of Windhoek in an independent Namibia (1990), founded the Cancer Association of (then) South West Africa in 1968.

It is the distinct aim of CAN to educate the general public regarding the prevention, early detection and dangers of cancer. CAN renders a welfare service to all cancer sufferers according to established criteria.
